Grand Junction Attorney Ashley Whitham first moved to the Western Slope after graduating from San Diego’s Thomas Jefferson Law School in 2011, when she accepted a job in the Grand Junction Public Defender’s office.
“The move to Grand Junction from San Diego was a big change,” said Ashley. “At first, I wasn’t sure if I would like it here, but as I settled in and met people in the area, Grand Junction started to grow on me.” Ashley soon learned to love the location of Grand Junction with its close proximity to so many wonderful hiking and biking areas.
In 2014, during her tenure with the Public Defender’s office, Ashley’s father passed away and her mother came to live with her soon after. “It was definitely an adjustment period,” said Ashley. “This was a pretty substantial lifestyle change. However, my mom is my best friend, so I was happy to have her come live with me.”
With the two living in Ashley’s small condo, they realized a larger space was needed. “In order for my mom to get to Grand Junction, we had to have her house packed up and movers move her things from Utah to Grand Junction,” said Ashley. “I was living in a condo, so we had to put most of her things into storage until we found a place bigger for us to move.”
They found a home on Redlands Mesa and were introduced to the Kimbrough Team. “They helped us find this amazing property in the Ledges,” said Ashley. She and her mom purchased the home in 2016, the same year that she and her mom gained custody of Ashley’s nephew. “We were pleased with the convenience and ease that the Kimbrough Team offered throughout the process,” said Ashley. Given the nature of Ashley’s job, and the need for accommodating three under one roof, convenience was essential.
Ashley also opened her own law firm in 2016. She and a co-worker from the Public Defender’s Office created Whitham and Tryon Law Group, specializing in Criminal Law and Family Law. “My work can be very challenging,” said Ashley. “As far as criminal law, I am typically dealing with a population that is either struggling with mental health issues, substance abuse issues or both. I spend hours each week at the jail working to get services for my clients.”
Ashley’s work in family law is often the most challenging. “My clients are going through some of the toughest times in their lives and their whole world is upside down. No one is ever contacting me because they are having a good day, but I would like to think that having me by their side helps ease the stress of these life changing matters.”
Just recently, Ashley has opened a second office in Glenwood Springs and will be traveling two days per week, while the other three she will remain in Grand Junction. Ashley, her mom and her nephew recently decided to sell their Redlands Mesa home, and transition back to a condo while finding a second place to live in Glenwood Springs.
They listed their Redlands Mesa home in November and it sold in less than 30 days. The Kimbrough Team worked hard to meet Ashley’s expectation for selling for a premium price in the housing market. With the timeliness of the sale of their home, The Kimbrough Team also helped expedite the process of finding Ashley and her mom a new condo with a 45-day window from contract to closing. “We had anticipated it would take longer to sell,” said Ashley. “Everything just went so smoothly.”
